Over the last few months, I’ve been grappling with my relationship with social media. I began sharing my writing publicly nearly three years ago, and at the time, Instagram seemed like the most accessible platform to connect with readers. We were also in the middle of the pandemic, and engaging on social media with strangers felt less terrifying than engaging in person.
For the first two years, I posted and engaged constantly in an effort to build a readership. It became a part-time job, and to a certain extent, my labor paid off. Three years later, I have over 22,000 people following my writing account. To anyone who doesn’t use social media for business or art, 22,000 people following an account may seem like a lot, but the reality is only a small percentage of an account’s followers regularly see their content.
